The New Norm?

What a year 2020 was—families hit by sicknesses, financial difficulties, violence across America, and blatant attacks on Christianity. One of the phrases that has been used repeatedly is, “the new norm.” The wearing of masks, limited access to employment, and goods and services being curtailed are presented as the way that life must continue. It is presented as the “new norm.” We are starting a new year, but must we accept this new norm?

We Need a New “New Norm”
Whether or not we have to wear masks to enter businesses or whether our favorite restaurant survived the last year is not as important as what God is attempting to do in our lives. We need a new “new norm.” We need God’s new norm. Imagine how different America would be if we followed God’s new norm. Imagine the unborn lives that would be protected if we followed God’s new norm. Imagine the decrease in unwed mothers, drug addiction, alcoholism, and even suicides if America would live according to God’s new norm.

What Would God’s New Norm Look Like?
Of course we would need a consensus as to what God’s new norm would look like. For us to all agree seems impossible, but what if God could somehow show us what His new norm should be? We’ve seen what man thinks the new norm should look like, and it’s clear that there’s no room for God. Why not see what God wants as the new norm?

God’s Word Shows Us God’s Way
How would God let us know what this new norm should be? It’s not as hard as you would think. It begins with the realization that the Bible is God’s Word. It does not contain God’s Word. It is God’s Word. If it contained God’s Word, then we would feel that we may choose what parts we think are His Word and which parts we think are expendable. But it is God’s Word, and therefore it reveals His will. If we would follow the pattern God presents in His Word as our new norm, what a wonderful world this would be!

It Begins With God’s People
God’s new norm should be the norm for the church. It must begin with His people. God’s children should pattern their lives according to God’s pattern. Being led by God’s Word should be our norm. We can’t expect the unregenerate world to live according to God’s new norm just as it’s impossible for true born-again believers to accept the world’s new norm. This is somewhat radical but imagine how blessed our lives would be if we lived every day according to what He states is normal. “God bless America” will happen when America blesses God.

He Has the Right to Decide
God has the right to determine what the norm should be. Paul told the church in Corinth, “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (I Cor. 6:19-20).

Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross redeemed us. Since we are redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, we owe Him everything. He clearly has the right to decide what the new norm should be. Every part of our lives should be lived according to His desires, His dictates, His directions. Imagine what a wonderful world this would be if we all lived according to His new norm.
